Eyes around League One: A big weekend of Easter fixtures!

A crazy few days of action commences this Friday with each side playing twice over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

The fate of sides chasing promotion and those scrapping at the bottom of the league will likely know their fate come Monday evening.

So, here is what the League One table looks like heading into the weekend:

 Sky Bet League One

The Lads currently sit in third position after their 5-4 loss last weekend against Coventry - though their promotion fate still remains within their grasp.

LUTON TOWN

Mick Harford’s men have two games this weekend against sides that are both fighting for their lives at the bottom of the League One table.

Luton were defeated last weekend for the first time in 2019 as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at the Valley against fellow promotion hopefuls Charlton Athletic, so their games this weekend will be key to their continued promotion push.

First off is a trip to Accrington Stanley on Friday before they welcome AFC Wimbledon to Kenilworth Road.

Accrington have lost three of their last five games, though they did pick up a precious three points last time out against Walsall at home.

AFC Wimbledon, on the other hand, have been in great form since the turn of the year and have went from almost certainties for relegation to now being on the cusp of safety - they have lost just one of their last eight games.

BARNSLEY

Daniel Stendel’s side picked up a huge win last weekend against Fleetwood Town at Oakwell that has put them back into a great position in the top two.

Their form has been patchy recently, but that win could be the spark they need to get over the finish line and into the top two - if results go their way over the coming weeks.

They face Shrewsbury Town at home on Friday before travelling all the way down to Plymouth Argyle on Monday.

Shrewsbury are just about safe as they sit six points above the drop zone, but a win this weekend would pretty much confirm their place in League One next season - they have just one defeat in their last five games.

Plymouth are still fighting for their lives and currently sit just three points above the dropzone - which is very concerning when you consider that they have not picked up a victory in their last five outings.

PORTSMOUTH

Kenny Jackett’s Pompey are on a roll at the moment and five straight wins - plus a Checkatrade Trophy Final victory have the team on the cusp of the automatic promotion places.

Like Sunderland, their fate remains within their own hands as both sides face each other next weekend.

They have a tricky looking Easter weekend with a trip to Burton Albion first and then the visit of Coventry City to Fratton Park on Monday.

Both of those sides are fresh in the memories of Sunderland fans as we picked up just one point from our two meetings with those clubs last week.

Burton are on their best run of the season having picked up four wins in their last five - the other was a draw at the Stadium of Light.

Coventry City have won two of their last five and are eight points outside the play-offs, so they could be fighting for the chance to remain in the race on Monday.

CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Lee Bowyer’s Charlton side have really put their foot on the gas in recent weeks and have went from play-off to automatic promotion candidates.

Six wins from their last seven games have propelled them onto the coattails of those above them - they now sit just three points behind second place Barnsley.

This weekend they face Oxford United away before hosting relegation strugglers Scunthorpe United at the Valley on Monday.

Oxford are currently sat in 12th and are comfortably safe, while Scunthorpe are struggling having lost four of their last five games.
