Team news: Ankle injury not expected to rule Maja out

Josh Maja’s ankle injury isn’t expected to see him sidelined for tomorrow’s trip to Doncaster Rovers.

The striker has been complaining for a couple of weeks with a slight knock to his ankle and was replaced by American Lynden Gooch early in the second 45 of Sunderland’s victory at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

While the change seemed purely tactical at the time, Jack Ross revealed in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Black Cats’ visit to the Keepmoat on Tuesday that Maja’s ankle injury is proving to be a concern.

The Scot also revealed that while the 19-year-old didn’t train on Monday, however, he isn’t expecting to be without him for their midweek test against Rovers.

“Nothing fresh, no other players will be returning,” Ross said.

“Josh Maja didn’t train today but that was precautionary because of the ankle injury he has been complaining about.

“Glenn Loovens will train on Thursday, he isn’t far away but will join in with full training then so won’t be in contention for tomorrow’s game.”
