Report: All square in South London

Millwall 1-1 Sunderland

Sunderland claimed a point in South London after Bryan Oviedo's stunner was cancelled out.

Oviedo handed Sunderland a half-time lead with a bullet effort, but Shaun Hutchinson scrambled home a second-half equaliser to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

SCENESETTER

Boss Chris Coleman made seven changes ahead of the game, including the return of Jason Steele in goal ahead of Lee Camp.

Tyias Browning, Aiden McGeady and Adam Matthews were also recalled, as was Ashley Fletcher, while Ovie Ejaria returned from injury and Callum McManaman won a start after impressing against Middlesbrough.

VITAL INTERVENTION

Millwall, riding a great run of form, weren't far away from taking the lead inside the first five minutes, but fortunately for the visitors Lee Cattermole was alert to bundle Jake Cooper's close-range header off the line.

Sunderland were happy to soak up the pressure on the opening exchanges, with McGeady and McManaman looking to break quickly either side of the central striker, Fletcher.

And the on-loan Middlesbrough man was inches away from giving his side the lead with 17 minutes played, just failing to get a connection on a fantastic Matthews cross.

BREAKING THROUGH

Sunderland stuck to their task, though, frustrating the home crowd and backed by a voiciferous away support.

And the 2,000 travelling fans were rewarded with a goal of the highest quality just before the half-hour.

A one-two at a short corner with McGeady gave Oviedo the space to shoot, and the Costa Rican blasted an unstoppable drive high into the net to leave Millwall keeper Jordan Archer helpless.

At the other end, Steele – playing his first league game since late October – ensured his side would hold a half-time lead, pulling off a good save to deny Shaun Williams, while Steve Morison headed wide.

REARGUARD ACTION

Millwall took the field for the second half having presumably had a rocket in the dressing room a the break, and it showed as Steele saved smartly from Lee Gregory before pushing George Saville's looping header over the bar.

With the hosts applying pressure, Coleman opted to make a change as McManaman made way for Joel Asoro, who picked up a knock against Middlesbrough but was passed fit to play pre-match.

ALL SQUARE

The visitors were thankful to Steele for a magnificent save with 20 minutes to go; the keeper blocking Morison's effort brilliantly with his legs with the Millwall striker unmarked.

But a scramble from the ensuing corner resulted in Hutchinson just about turning the ball over the line despite the best efforts of Oviedo and Cattermole.

With Millwall on the hunt for a winner, Coleman replaced McGeady with George Honeyman and retained two up front, with Asoro supporting Fletcher.

Steele was soon in the thick of the action again, diving bravely at the feet of Lee Gregory to put the striker off as he toe-poked wide.

Meanwhile Sunderland's best chance of the closing stages came four minutes from time as Honeyman sent Fletcher away, but his ball across the face of goal was just too powerful for Asoro who couldn't connect at the far post.
