International duty: Matthews an unused sub in Wales victory

Adam Matthews was an unused substitute as Wales got off to a flying start in China on Thursday afternoon.

Gareth Bale scored a hat-trick as Ryan Giggs started his reign as Wales boss in spectacular fashion, defeating China 6-0.

Bales’ treble sees him become the nation’s leading scorer as he surpassed Ian Rush’s tally of 28.

The Real Madrid frontman opened the scoring after three minutes before slotting home his second of the afternoon shortly after to level with Rush in the goalscoring chart.

Sam Vokes then turned home a third before Harry Wilson marked his 21st birthday with a whipped effort which soared home.

Burnley forward Vokes added his second and Wales' fifth after the break before Bale completed the scoring his an historic third.

Next up for Giggs’ men is Monday’s China Cup final against either Uruguay or Czech Republic.
