Interview: McLaughlin welcomes familiar face

Jon McLaughlin is looking forward to linking up with his former team-mate, Tom Flanagan, once again.

The duo, who both signed for Sunderland this week, played alongside each other for Burton Albion during the Brewers’ 2015-16 Sky Bet League One promotion-winning season.

And speaking to safc.com, McLaughlin went into detail about what Flanagan will bring to the Stadium of Light.

“It’s good to see Flans again as we had two good seasons together with Burton Albion and we had a lot of success together,” said the goalkeeper.

“Like myself, he has good experience at this level – and the level above – and we know what it’s all about which I’m sure is something the manager has looked at, so hopefully we can enjoy more success at Sunderland.”

He continued: “He can play in a number of positions, including centre back, right back and left back.

“He’s very adaptable in defence but he’s also good at supporting play going forward, and I’m sure that’s going to be important for us this season.

“First and foremost, though, he’s a good defender and he knows what it takes to be successful at this level.

“There’s nothing better than playing with people you know and trust, especially as a goalkeeper, and we will try to continue that here and make the defensive unit a very calm place.

“Then, we can concentrate on being a force at the other end of the pitch and winning games.”
