Natural leader: Ross' Loovens lowdown

Glenn Loovens will have a big impact on and off the pitch, according to Sunderland manager Jack Ross.

The experienced defender signed a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light on Friday, as the Lads bolstered their backline with a fourth defensive signing of the summer.

Joining Alim Ozturk, Tom Flanagan and Reece James on Wearside, Loovens will bring experience, leadership and proven quality to Ross’ defensive unit.

And speaking to safc.com, the boss explained why the Dutchman will be a valuable addition.

“When we sign a player we have to think carefully about why we’re recruiting them, and we have quite a young squad so we need players with leadership qualities and experience.

“Glenn has all of that in abundance, plus he’s looked after himself physically and his recent playing history is very good in terms of the amount of games he’s played.”

He continued: “It’s also a position where we need strength in depth, so he ticks a lot of boxes.

“I met him this afternoon, and have spoken to him previously, and he’ll be good for our dressing room.

“He was very popular at Sheffield Wednesday and people speak very highly of him, and his playing pedigree obviously speaks for itself.

“He’s a strong character and those qualities – in the dressing room and on the pitch – will be helpful for us this year, as it’s a long season with a lot of games.”
