Jack Ross has spoken about the need for his players to enjoy playing football as he reflected on his first win as manager.
The Black Cats begun the evening well at Blundell Park, quickly onto the front foot and peppering the hosts’ goal with Ethan Robson and Donald Love taking aim.
Callum McManaman offered a tricky option on the right while Chris Maguire looked keen to drop short and spark things in the middle – a tact that eventually came good when his clipped ball over the top found Lynden Gooch on the diving header to make the breakthrough.
Grimsby offered a sterner test in the second 45 as tiredness began to set in, but the lads held their own and could’ve doubled their advantage had Gooch’s effort, which flew across the face of goal, been touched home.
