Jack Ross questioned Glenn Looven’s red card post-match as Sunderland fell to their second leagued defeat of the season.
After a closely-fought first 45, Loovens was dismissed just minutes into the second half as he brought down Oli Hawkins.
Gareth Evans made no mistake from the spot before Ronan Curtis added a second with 53 minutes played.
Luke O’Nien then pulled one back before Ben Thompson rounded off the scoring in the 63rd minute.
