Plenty of positives: Ross turns attentions to Scunthorpe

Jack Ross is refusing to get downbeat after Sunderland’s round one Carabao Cup exit.

The Lads fell at the first hurdle last night as Sheffield Wednesday defeated them 2-0 at the Stadium of Light to set-up a home tie against Wolves later this month.

While it’s the end of the road for Ross’ side in the 2018-19 League Cup, he has insisted there were plenty of positives to draw on and learn from ahead of Sunday’s crucial Sky Bet League One clash with Scunthorpe United.

Undefeated in the league after two games, Ross is keen to maintain his side’s early season promise and has admitted while an individual error cost the Lads dearly on Thursday night the overall performance is something that must become a regular occurrence.

“It is always disappointing to lose any match, especially when we are trying to create a mentality in the group to not accept losing games,” he said.

“On the flip side of that, large parts of our performance were good and for large parts of the game we were the better team.

“I think the last 15 minutes could put a bit of a false spin on it a little but that’s an area we can be a little bit better in because we looked flat when the second one went in.

“We need to lose that, but that’s not a criticism because I don’t think we could’ve done an awful lot more in terms of what we asked from them.

“There are more good things than bad things from last night’s performance, that’s not shying away from the game.

“The encouraging thing is the players are taking on board what we are asking them to do.

“I think you can see that and people can see that watching the game,” he continued.

“If we can replicate that performance in league games, and in this stadium, then I think we will give teams a hard time.”
