A proud moment: Hume on first-team minutes

Hard work pays off.

That’s the mantra Denver Hume has stuck to over pre-season and on Thursday night he was rewarded for his efforts as he made his full Sunderland debut.

While the natural left back was forced to play on the right side of the Black Cats’ defence, the youngster didn’t look out of place as the Lads took the Carabao Cup tie to Sheffield Wednesday.

However, despite being knocked out after a 2-0 defeat on home soil, Hume shared his pride with safc.com as he reflected career milestone.

“I thought we played well to be fair,” he said.

“We kept possession well, moved it and bossed the game but it’s just the two goals we conceded.

“They were poor goals to concede but overall, I thought it was a good performance from us.

“It was great (to make my full debut) because I have worked hard in training.

“The manager told me to go out there and enjoy myself, he said I had earned my opportunity, so it was good to get out there.

He continued: “I am enjoying it a lot this season. It is completely different to previous years, but we are doing well, and I think if we can keep working then we will get back up to where we belong.

“It’s great to be in the first team with all the young lads. That’s what the manager wants, it is a young squad, but it has experience in there and that’ll help us push on.”
