Duncan Watmore is keeping his feet firmly on the ground as he continues his return to full fitness.

The Roadrunner made it a goalscoring return to action on Saturday when he successfully completed 45 minutes for Sunderland under-23s against Manchester City.

But having been sidelined for nine months, the 23-year-old is refusing to get carried away and has admitted he will continue to keep his head down and remain focused on being patient.

“It was a great because it has obviously been a frustrating nine months as you can imagine but it is great to be back playing again so I really enjoyed it,” he said.

“You always want to score after such a long injury and it is always nice if you can score straight away and hit the ground running.

“That’s what I managed to do and I probably had another couple of chances that I could’ve scored as well.

“I felt good and I felt fresh so it was nice,” he continued.

“I am going to train fully this week and then I will play on Sunday with the under-23s again because I need to ease my way back in and then we will take it from there.

“You always want to be playing, I can’t rush it because I have been patient for nine months so there is no point rushing the last two weeks.

“I have just got to keep listening to the advice of the physios and do what they say.

“It is very important to be level headed with these kind of injuries and that is what I have tried to do.”
