View from the opposition: McCarthy eyes top six

Mick McCarthy has urged his players to maintain the standard they’ve set in their opening eight Sky Bet Championship outings.

Ipswich Town currently sit seventh in the table and, ahead of Sunderland’s visit to Portman Road, the former Black Cats boss is eyeing a place in the top six.

On Saturday the Tractor Boys slipped to a 3-2 defeat against league leaders Leeds United at Elland Road, but McCarthy took plenty of positives from an ‘encouraging performance’.

And speaking to Ipswich iFollow, the Ipswich boss challenged his side to return to winning ways.

“We played very well,” said McCarthy.

“Now we have to get that winning mentality back after an encouraging performance.”

He continued: “We want to go out and entertain the fans.

“It’s nice as I always fancy us to score goals and I have faith in the team.

“I want to get back in the top six, and that aim starts against Sunderland.”
