Team news: Williams and McManaman to be assessed, Watmore update

Simon Grayson will assess Jonny Williams and Callum McManaman this afternoon to see if the pair can return for tomorrow night's trip to Ipswich Town.

The duo were late withdrawals from Saturday’s matchday squad, forcing Grayson so shuffle his troops at the eleventh hour ahead of Cardiff City at the Stadium of Light.

But with eyes now firmly fixed on Tuesday night’s trip to Portman Road, the Black Cats boss admitted at his pre-match press conference a decision will be made on the duo this afternoon.

Grayson also provided an update on Duncan Watmore after the 23-year-old continued his recovery in Sunderland under-23s’ Premier League 2 fixture against West Ham United on Sunday.

“Duncan played 65-70 minutes yesterday and looked very good in terms of what he was doing,” he said.

“It is still only an under-23s game but he could’ve scored four or five goals.

“I watched the game yesterday so was pleased with what he did.

“Again, we have to go to the physio and the medical department to see when he can be involved but I am sure that day will be sooner rather than later,” he continued.

“In terms of Jonny Williams and Callum McManaman both obviously didn’t train yesterday but the players will be in this afternoon so we will have more of an update on them this afternoon.”
