Manager's preview: Grayson targets Cardiff win

The desire to succeed within Sunderland's squad will ensure winning ways return to Wearside sooner rather than later, says Simon Grayson.

The Black Cats boss was in a buoyant mood ahead of Saturday’s Stadium of Light showdown against Cardiff City, but his ambition to register a first league win of the campaign was clear throughout.

And although the pressure is on to banish the Lads' recent home hoodoo, he's confident his players can overcome the task at hand and defeat the Bluebirds.

“I have to make the players as comfortable and as confident as possible, and try to forget about it,” said Grayson when asked about Sunderland's wait for a home win.

“It’ll happen sooner or later and I know that without a shadow of a doubt because we have a good group of players who are desperate to do well.”

He continued: “We’ve played well enough at home in the games we’ve played so far this season without getting that victory, so let’s hope it starts tomorrow and we can move on.

“I think the fans were very patient with the players [against Nottingham Forest] because they saw that we played well, passed the ball around and created some good chances.

“We never gave up and we kept on going until the end – they saw that – and if the players play to their maximum with the commitment we’d like them to, the supporters will have no problem getting behind the team and staying with them.

“We know exactly what to expect from Neil’s team so we need to be at it, play with confidence and the quality we’ve got, and hopefully we’ll come out with a positive result.”
