Simon Grayson believes it was a case of two points dropped rather than a point gained at the KCOM Stadium this afternoon.

James Vaughan scored his first goal for the club when he headed home Callum McManaman’s floated cross on 16 minutes.

The Black Cats then missed further opportunities to extend their lead, with Vaughan and McManaman going closest only for Allan McGregor to stand tall each time.

But former Black Cat midfielder David Meyler made Hull’s late onslaught pay dividends, as his stabbed effort deflected in off Robbin Ruiter to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

Speaking post-match Grayson delivered his verdict.

“When you look at how we dominated the game in the first half, the chances we created we were disappointed to have not won the game,” he said.

“We had to stay strong and we were probably hanging on at the end.

“There were a lot of tired lads out there who have not played a lot of football over the last few weeks and months and they were on their last legs.

“We wanted to break the cycle of four straight defeats,” he continued.

“Of course, we are disappointed to have not won the game, we had some great opportunities and the keeper made a great save from Callum McManaman.

“Ultimately, for all the pressure they had on us it was a deflected goal that equalised for them.

“We are disappointed and it is a disappointing dressing room because we felt we should’ve won the game this afternoon.”
