Match preview: Chelsea v Sunderland

Sunderland travel to Chelsea on Sunday (KO 3pm) as the curtain falls on the 2016-17 Premier League season.

The Black Cats’ fate was confirmed at the end of April as a late defeat to AFC Bournemouth saw them relegated to the second tier, with defeats to Swansea City and Arsenal following a 2-0 win at Hull City a fortnight ago.

From Ji Dong-Wong's last-minute winner against Manchester City to Jermain Defoe’s thunderbolt against Newcastle United, Sunderland have enjoyed many highs during their 10-year stay in the top flight, including derby-day dominance, a trip to Wembley and a 10th-place finish.

And although Sunday’s trip to Stamford Bridge offers a time to reflect, David Moyes has revealed preparations are well under to ensure the Black Cats take the Championship by storm.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are aiming to become the first club to win 30 Premier League games in a season, having won 29 on two occasions.

Antonio Conte’s side have been unstoppable this season leaving the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Liverpool in their wake, with the Blues claiming their second title in three years.

Captain John Terry, who has led the club to countless honours, will bow out on Sunday and bring a two-decade spell at the Bridge to an end.

And having scored in Monday’s thrilling 4-3 win over Watford, he’ll be hoping to end with a win before lifting the title alongside Gary Cahill.

Conte, though, is keeping his cards close to his chest revealing it will be a ‘surprise’ whether the former England captain starts or comes off the bench against the Black Cats.

Rueben Loftus-Cheek is the Blues’ only confirmed absentee.

Meanwhile, Sunderland boss Moyes has revealed his disappointment with regards to the sheer number of injuries plaguing the Lads heading into the game.

Paddy McNair, Duncan Watmore, Jan Kirchhoff, Steven Pienaar, George Honeyman, Wahbi Khazri, Jason Denayer, Victor Anichebe and Papy Djilobodji all missed the midweek trip to the Emirates Stadium.

And Lamine Kone and Didier Ndong will also be unavailable for selection this weekend.

Sunderland have won two of the last six meetings between the sides but the Blues have come out on top in 20 of the last 24 Premier League match-ups.

And with the all-time PL win record in their sights, the champions will be a force to be reckoned with.
