Three Lions calling: Defoe gets England nod while Pickford heads to U21s camp

Jordan Pickford and Jermain Defoe have been selected for international duty over the coming weeks.

The Washington-born stopper has been in inspired form for Sunderland all season, oozing confidence since cementing his place between the posts.

In 2016 Pickford’s consistent form led to senior recognition as Gareth Southgate called upon the youngster, but he’s also vastly experienced at under-21 level having become a key player for the side over recent years.

And with focused fixed on this summer’s UEFA European Championships, Aidy Boothroyd will assess his options at a pre-tournament training camp at St George’s Park before narrowing his options down further.

Elsewhere, 15-goal frontman Defoe has once again received international recognition from England manager Gareth Southgate.

The 34-year-old returned to the international frame in March and dazzled at Wembley, finding the net in the Three Lions’ World Cup qualifier win over Lithuania.

And Defoe’s attitude and enthusiasm left its mark on Southgate who has again called on his services for their next crucial qualifier against Scotland and their friendly with France in June.
