I owe Sunderland everything: Honeyman on new contract

George Honeyman is revelling in the thought of representing Sunderland for the next two years, and has admitted he owes everything to the club.

The midfielder, who progressed through the club’s youth ranks, has signed a new two-year contract which will keep him on Wearside until July 2019.

Having joined the club aged 10, the Beekeeper made his first-team debut in 2014 before later becoming a prominent fixture in the senior frame under David Moyes during the 2016-17 campaign.

While the 22-year-old missed the last few matches of the season through injury, fan favourite Honeyman had done enough to earn himself a new deal with the Black Cats.

Speaking to safc.com, the midfielder shared his delight to pen his future to the Stadium of Light.

“I’m delighted it has all been finalised and now I’m looking forward to working hard and spending the next couple of years at Sunderland,” he said.

“It means everything to my family and I to play football for our first-team. I have loved every second of my time at the club ever since they were taking me in four times a week when I was 11.

“I owe them a lot and wouldn’t have achieved this without them.”

He continued: “I want to be a regular in the team and help achieve promotion and I truly believe next season we can achieve both of those things.”
