Currently recovering from a knee injury, the 23-year-old was aboard a fishing boat when it was hit – and broken in two – following a collision with a catamaran, which subsequently left three elderly passengers marooned aboard the sinking vessel.
As quick-a-thinker as he is a runner, Watmore managed to haul the trio out of the water and to safety just moments before it sank.
And when asked about the incident in his pre-match press conference, the Sunderland boss had nothing but admiration for his heroic winger.
“I didn’t know about it until I read it and asked him about it, but I’ve got to stay the story he told me was incredible.
“It’s a great thing he’s done; there was real danger and he helped save people’s lives.
“I think he was milking it a bit yesterday,” joked Moyes.
“He’s a really good boy, a humble boy, and he certainly wasn’t in boasting about it that’s for sure.”
