Transfer news: Borini joins AC Milan

Fabio Borini has joined AC Milan on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

Borini’s first taste of Wearside football came in the 2013-14 season when he played his part in a truly remarkable campaign.

He opened his Sunderland account in stunning fashion with late winner against Newcastle United, and he once again proved to be Sunderland’s derby-day hero in February 2014 as the Lads registered an unforgettable 3-0 win at St James’ Park.

In the same season, the Italian spearheaded Sunderland’s memorable Capital One Cup run, scoring against Chelsea and Manchester United en route to Wembley before opening the scoring against Manchester City in the showpiece final.

And his role in the Greatest Escape was equally valuable, as goals against Chelsea, Cardiff City and West Bromwich Albion saw Gus Poyet’s men create a miracle.

The 2013-14 Young Player of the Year returned to the Stadium of Light in August 2015 penning a four-year deal, and he once again played a key role as the Black Cats’ avoided the drop.

Former manager Sam Allardyce labelled his last-minute equaliser against Crystal Palace the ‘goal of the season’, and he also found the net in vital wins of Norwich City and Chelsea.

Last season, the Italian missed three months through injury before returning to action and scoring two goals in 26 appearances.

Borini returns to Serie A for the first time since 2011 when he scored nine league goals in 24 appearances for Roma.

Everyone at the club would like to wish Fabio the best of luck.
