Team news: Vaughan starts against St Johnstone

New signing James Vaughan makes his first Sunderland start today as the Black Cats take on St Johnstone.

The striker, who joined from Bury earlier this week, leads the line as Wahbi Khazri and Jeremain Lens are tasked with supplying the former Everton man.

Vito Mannone returns to the starting XI after being rested against Livingston, as Lee Cattermole, Didier Ndong and Jack Rodwell form the centre of midfield.

Adam Matthews once again starts in a back four which also includes Lamine Kone and loan signing Brendan Galloway.

And there’s also a nugget of history hidden with today’s starting XI, as John O’Shea returns to McDiarmid Park 19 years after helping Republic of Ireland win the UEFA under-16 European Championships.

Sunderland: Mannone, Matthews, Galloway, Kone, O’Shea, Cattermole, Ndong, Rodwell, Khazri, Lens, Vaughan.

Substitutes: Stryjek, Beadling, Gibson, Djilobodji, Love, Honeyman, Maja, Asoro, E Robson, Embleton, Browning.
