Over the moon: Defoe buzzing after big win

David Moyes was ‘over the moon’ with Sunderland’s first-half display against Crystal Palace, says Jermain Defoe.

The Black Cats’ top scorer netted twice in the space of two minutes at the end of the opening period, adding to earlier strikes from Lamine Kone and Didier Ndong to cement a big win.

But the job was far from done, with Sam Allardyce’s side bombarding the Sunderland defence throughout the second-half in an attempt to gain a route back into the game.

They couldn’t find one, and speaking to safc.com the 34-year-old hailed a professional performance and the red and white army.

“It was the perfect performance so everyone was delighted and the manager was over the moon –  and that was only at the break,” said Defoe.

“It was important that we went out in the second half and keep a clean sheet, but we did that against a tough team – they are direct and physical – so to win a game like that was spot on.”

He continued: “The fans always turn up in numbers to support the team so we always want to put in performances like that and give something back, so I hope they enjoyed the long trip home.

“It’s important for me to keep scoring, so I need to keep getting into those positions and work hard because if I do I’ll always believe that I can score.”
