Lov-ing it!: Full-back on Blues point, game time and festive fixtures

Donald Love is loving life in red and white under the stewardship of Chris Coleman.

The full-back has featured in all three of Sunderland’s last fixtures, helping the Black Cats to secure back-to-back clean sheets before yesterday’s 1-1 draw against Birmingham City.

Having switched to a back five at Molineux earlier this month, Coleman has deployed Love as an attacking full-back, encouraging him and Adam Matthews, who has played left-back in the previous three matches following Bryan Oviedo’s injury, to join in with the Black Cats’ attacking movements.

Matthews played a huge role in Josh Maja’s match winner against Fulham last Saturday, calmly threading the ball into his path before Love’s volley bounced kindly for Lewis Grabban to stab home and earn the lads a point against the Blues.

And speaking to safc.com, Love admitted he is savouring every second of game time under Coleman’s guidance as the festive fixtures begin to come thick and fast with Sheffiled United up next on Boxing Day.

“I am enjoying my role and the way the manager wants me to play,” he said.

“Everyone is buying into the way he wants to play and everyone is working for each other, so things are good.

“Results didn’t go our way on Saturday, but I think it could be a good point come the end of the season.

“We got something out of the game, it is something rather than nothing.

“Everyone is gutted we didn’t get the win to really build on from last weekend’s win, but it is a point and it could be a big one,” he continued.

“We have kept two clean sheets out of three and that has to be the platform we build on.

“We were unfortunate with the goal we conceded against Birmingham, but we fought back and got a point.”
