Team news: Gooch out of Barnsley clash

Lynden Gooch will miss Monday’s game against Barnsley due to a hamstring problem, but Paddy McNair could feature against the Tykes.

USA international Gooch came off the bench in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, as Aiden McGeady’s header saw Chris Coleman’s side claim a much-needed win.

Gooch, 22, has made 19 first-team appearances this term, scoring two goals and assisting a further three.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland international McNair could hand the Black Cats a timely boost and return to action on New Year’s Day.

After victory on Trentside, Coleman said the midfielder ‘has a chance’ of being involved.

“For sure, Lynden Gooch is going to be out because he hurt his hamstring,” confirmed the Welshman.

“It’s a shame because somebody with his energy, we were looking for him to play a big part on Monday.”

He added: “But Paddy has half a chance.

He trained yesterday and he may have to play some part against Barnsley because we haven’t got any more bodies.”

Sunderland will once again be without Lewis Grabban, with Lamine Kone, Lee Cattermole, Jack Rodwell, Didier Ndong, Jonny Williams and Duncan Watmore also still sidelined.
