Darron Gibson: Magic Maj provides options

Darron Gibson has heralded the impact of Josh Maja ahead of Saturday's home match against Birmingham City.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder believes Maja proved his worth on Saturday when he, and Joel Asoro, replaced leading scorer Lewis Grabban and James Vaughan in the second 45.

Making his league debut for the club, Maja seized his chance as he swept home Adam Matthews' threaded ball, to give the lads victory over Fulham at the Stadium of Light.

And speaking to safc.com, Gibson has admitted the hardworking nature that Coleman demands from his team has allowed youngsters like Maja then chance to shine.

“The lads are working hard in training every day and since the new manager has come in he has changed the shape,” he said.

“It seems to be working, he has got us working hard for each other and it seems to be paying off.

“The manager was brave with substitutions, he went for it at 0-0.

“The lads who came on did very well and obviously (Josh) Maja got his goal which is great for him," he continued.

“It is great for him and it gives the manager another option up front. We defended really well again, though.

“Not taking anything away from Maja scoring the goal but even before he scored and especially after he scored we dug deep. We grinded a result out.”
