Calm and composed: Coleman praises assured Embleton

Away from home, under pressure and down to ten men, playing against the highest scoring team in the division as they look to extend their lead at the top.

And, crucially, one substitute remaining.

Many would rely on experience in this instance, but Chris Coleman called upon Elliot Embleton and the Welshman had no concerns whatsoever about handing the midfielder his debut despite the state of play - and he was rewarded as the Black Cats shutout Wolves to claim a point.

Embleton has been a key member of the club’s under-23 side for the past year or so, but he’s started to make waves at first-team level and regularly trains with his senior counterparts.

And his manager had nothing but praise him following his debut at Molineux,

“I didn’t have any worries about Elliot, none at all,” said Coleman.

“We lost Lynden Gooch to cramp because he ran himself into the ground, but Elliot going on wasn’t a problem and Gibbo controlled him, spoke with him and told him where he needed him.”

He continued: “He was completely calm and you want that assured confidence.

“You need a little bit of arrogance, not too much, and when Elliot came on his was calm, composed and he looked like he’d been there before.

“I was really pleased for him.”
