Team news: Oviedo returns to training

Sunderland defender Bryan Oviedo has returned to training.

The Costa Rican left-back is unlikely to be involved in Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie at Bury, but he could return to match action 24 hours later when the under-23s take on Tottenham Hotspur at Eppleton CW.

Oviedo, 27, picked up an injury in the summer while on international duty which saw him miss the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the start of the domestic season.

But Simon Grayson has no fresh injury concerns following Friday’s draw with Derby County.

“The players who were involved on Friday night are fine and they’ll be available on Thursday.

“Bryan Oviedo trained on Sunday so it’ll be nice to have him back, but I would think he’s more likely to train all week and then there’s an under-23 game on Friday that he could be involved in to get some game time.”

He continued: “Jack Rodwell is training again and Paddy McNair and Duncan Watmore are making good progress.

“Josh Maja hasn’t quite recovered from a knee injury, but it won’t be too long before he’s back.”
