Dream come true: Honeyman recaps special moment

George Honeyman was lost for words after fulfilling a boyhood dream at Bury on Thursday evening.

The Northumberland-born midfield was tenacious and determined throughout, but he also showed his undoubted quality in the final third with a surging run engineering an opening that led to his first goal in red and white.

A sublime chip provided the finishing touch before an emotional celebration in front of the Sunderland fans capped off an unforgettable evening, as the youngster’s strike sent the Black Cats into the second round of the Carabao Cup.

And speaking to safc.com, Honeyman admitted he simply can’t describe what he felt as watched the net ripple and away end explode into life.

“I can’t really describe it.

“It’s pretty special and I’ve been waiting and wanting to feel what I felt there.”

He continued: “I’m so happy to get the goal tonight and the fact it was the winner makes it even better.

“It means a lot to have the backing of the fans and to hear a little song after the goal was pretty special for me, but I want to keep pleasing them and keep doing well for the team.

“We normally play Carlisle in pre-season and it’s not too far a trip which I’m sure we’re all happy about, so I’m looking forward to it.”
