Team news: Latest on Defoe knock

Sunderland are sweating on the fitness of Jermain Defoe ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Leicester City, with David Moyes revealing the striker missed training on Sunday due to a knock.

The England international was on the receiving end of several heavy challenges during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Watford, but despite receiving treatment during the early stages of the second-half he completed the remainder of the game.

With 15 goals this season for club and country, Defoe will be a decisive figure during the final run-in with just nine Premier League games remaining.

And speaking to safc.com, Moyes provided the latest on the frontman.

“He didn’t train yesterday and, as we’re doing this press conference, we’re yet to train today.

“He’s got a knock just below his knee – it was a challenge rather than something to do with his knee – so we need to see how he is today.”

Moyes also touched on Lee Cattermole’s potential involvement, after the midfielder was an unused substitute at Vicarage Road.

“The fact of the matter is he hasn’t played any games all season.

“Want him to be part of the squad because of his enthusiasm and his attitude, and he may well be involved but I don’t think he’s physically in the right condition to play 90 minutes.”

He added: “Maybe he can help us in another period of the game.”
