Update: Moyes on van Aanholt

Patrick van Aanholt will travel to London with the rest of Sunderland’s squad ahead of Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie at Queens Park Rangers.

The Netherlands international was initially named in the starting XI for Sunday’s game at Tottenham Hotspur, but as kick-off approached he was replaced by Jason Denayer.

Speaking at his pre-QPR press conference, Moyes expanded on the medical reasons behind van Aanholt’s late omission, revealing his absence was due to a late intervention following the results of a cardiac screening.

He added: “Patrick will travel to London with us and we will make a decision on that a little bit later.

“We had to make a decision there and then on the spot but Patrick will travel with us to London today [Tuesday].

“It was completely out of our control but it was in our control to make the right decision for the player and for the football club.”
