Moyes: We deserved much more

Sunderland were left to wonder what might have been as Sofiane Boufal’s screamer sent the Black Cats out of the EFL Cup on a controversial night at St Mary’s.

After Boufal shattered the deadlock in style, Sunderland regrouped and went in search of an equaliser as leading scorer Jermain Defoe entered the reckoning.

But it was it was Victor Anichebe who was involved in the biggest moment late on, with the powerful striker seemingly tripped in the box leading to Moyes being sent to the stands as a frustrating finale ensued on the south coast.

Speaking post-match, the Sunderland manager was adamant his side should have won a penalty and, had they scored, been able to take the game into extra-time.

“We should have had a chance to take a penalty kick and if we had scored it, to go to extra-time, but it didn’t happen.

“I’m disappointed we are out of the cup, that’s the big thing.”

He continued: “The players played really well tonight and I felt they deserved to come away with much more.

“I thought there was some good stuff so I just have to hope it’s noticeable because we’re not getting the results at the moment, but hopefully they are coming.

“The players will take confidence from how they played.”
