Talking points: Managers have their say

David Moyes and Jurgen Klopp have their say following Sunderland's 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Sunderland’s resilience

Klopp: “It’s about the timing of when you get the first goal. And the longer you don’t, the most important thing is you don’t get frustrated because we need to get used to situations like this. "Sunderland play a defensive style and that is OK. We forced them to be that. But we had our moments, had our chances, we stayed cool, stayed concentrated."

Moyes: "If you look at the quality of Liverpool going forward, you do need to think about how you stop them. I knew we had to come here and defend. They won 6-1 here the other week [against Watford] so we didn’t want to come here and get rolled over that easy. My job was not to come here and entertain the Anfield crowd, my job was to come here and get a result for Sunderland. We had to try and do that. We didn’t do that but tried hard to."

Taking chances

Klopp: "Divock was in the game from the first second. It's not easy, not a situation where you expect to come on the pitch, and he really needed to switch on in a second, and he did. He deserved it, he is so hard-working. He is patient, knows where he has to improve, and is still positive. And he is the player today who perhaps deserved it most as he hasn't had the easiest time behind him."

Moyes: “They had missed chances but we had a great chance, Victor (Anichebe) set up (Duncan) Watmore and he couldn't get his shot away. We needed that to go in, they are the small margins we sometimes need to take and didn't do so. I'm not even sure it [the opener] was a shot or a cross but whatever it was, it was a goal.”

Game management

Klopp: “Usually they have one-and-a-half strikers, today it was like 0.75 strikers. That of course you cannot expect. But you have to find a solution, and the guys stayed cool enough, to find this one moment. We gave nearly nothing away, of course there were one or two difficult situations but that's normal. They worked really hard and deserved the three points.”

Moyes: “It was always going to be a difficult job coming here, they have a great attacking theory about them, they are great going forward and are the best attacking team in the Premier League at this present time. We had to make sure we did our job defensively and create opportunities when we could. It was always going to be a difficult game but I thought the players did a great job managing it.”

The atmosphere

Klopp: “I can understand it was not that loud in the stadium at that moment, but we all need to learn that games against, the English saying 'parking bus' teams, the excitement is in the detail, and everyone has to do their job. My job in that moment was to remind the crowd that we needed help, especially in situations like this. They reacted very well, and helped us a lot, so it was a nice afternoon.”

Moyes: “The crowd are certainly with the manager here, which is great for them and he is able to influence the crowd and did so. I thought we had got the point where it was needing their manager to get the crowd going. We had frustrated them for long periods.”

Final say

Klopp: “If you want to say it, it’s our fault that teams are playing that deep, but we can improve a lot, and we are ready for teams doing that. At the end, maybe it was one of the most deserved wins I was ever part of. So I’m fine with the result and with the performance, because it’s not about being genius, it’s about being ready for a game like this. And the boys did, again, unbelievably well. [It was] very important for us.”

Moyes: “I don't know any good teams that aren't defensively sound. If you want to win the Premier League you have to have a sound defence. If you want to stay in the Premier League you have to be good enough defensively. We did a job today but it wasn't good enough. But I have to praise the players against the quality we were playing, they stuck to their task and came pretty close.”
