Super Billy Jones: Moyes hails defender

David Moyes has paid tribute to Billy Jones ahead of Sunderland’s trip to Liverpool.

The right-back endured a disjointed pre-season with injuries ruling him out of the opening stages of the campaign, but after returning to fitness the defender has been a standout performer.

Jones, 29, made his first start of the season against Arsenal and he’s been ever-present since, playing a big role at the back as the Black Cats sealed consecutive Premier League wins.

Speaking to safc.com, Moyes hailed the defender’s timely return to form.

“Billy was someone I’d known and always respected for his steady-eddy approach when he plays, but when I came he obviously wasn’t in a good condition.

“They told me he hadn’t been fit for a long time but I think Billy’s another one who looks like he’s in a better place and probably feels a lot better now.”

He continued: “I told him that he would definitely be involved if he got himself back fit.

“We’ve got Javier, who has also done well in games, but I felt we needed a bit of Billy’s Britishness when we were struggling for some results.

“He hasn’t disappointed me and he’s done well.”
