Fortress of Light: Anichebe targets Tigers win

Sunderland will be ready to go when Hull City travel to the Stadium of Light on Saturday (KO 3pm).

A sense of excitement and anticipation has been bubbling under the surface at the Academy of Light throughout the international break, with the Black Cats buoyant following a 2-1 win over AFC Bournemouth.

It won’t be easy against a Hull City side who overcame high-flying Southampton 24 hours after Sunderland’s south coast success at the Vitality Stadium.

But speaking to safc.com the Nigerian backed the Black Cats to tame the Tigers and earn their first Premier League win at home during the current campaign.

“We need to make the Stadium of Light a fortress,” said Anichebe. “I’ve watched Sunderland in the past and I know it is a really difficult place for teams to come.

“I always call on the support of the fans and if they continue to roar us on like they did in the last game then it will give us a great push to pick up a victory on Saturday.”

He continued: “The win at Bournemouth was pleasing and relieving but we can’t rely on that one game and we really need to push on from here.

“When we went down to ten men we could have crumbled – many teams would have – because it was difficult for us for a good ten minutes, but I turned to the fans and said ‘come on’ and they really got behind us.

“Hull City aren’t in the position they’d like to be but it’s going to be a tough game because, like us, they have momentum, however, we will think of ourselves, train hard and be ready.

“Ourselves, the staff and the fans need to stick together so we come through this.”
