Checkatrade Trophy: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Sunderland

Sunderland enter the knockout stages of the Checkatrade Trophy for the first time in their history as they travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers tonight (KO 7pm).

The Black Cats looked to be crashing out of the EFL Trophy last month as they trailed at home to Notts County in their final group match.

However, an inspired final 10 minutes, spearheaded by second-half substitute Josh Maja, saw the hosts come from behind to secure victory and their pathway through to round two.

With seven points from their three group matches, Robbie Stockdale’s side finished second in Northern group F and as a result were drawn against Wolverhampton Wanderers who topped group B.

Wolves collected six points from their three group matches with pleasing victories over Crewe Alexandra and Accrington Stanley.

As both senior sides featuring in league action on Saturday, it’s unclear which first-team faces could feature for both sides.

However, the Black Cats will have under-23s topscorer George Honeyman to call on who has netted five times so far this campaign while Scott Sellar is likely to be reliant on 18-year-old forward Bright Enobakhare who has also netted five times.
