In it to win it: Honeyman targets cup success

George Honeyman has reiterated Sunderland’s intent in the Checkatrade Trophy ahead of Monday’s showdown at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Black Cats head to Molineux bidding to progress through their first knockout round match after Robbie Stockdale successfully guided the Lads through their group undefeated with seven points from three matches.

With an impressive late turn around against Notts County last month, to secure their place in round two, Honeyman believes the spirit shown in that game highlights the Black Cats’ desire to go all the way in this year’s EFL Trophy.

“These are the games we want to impress in as young players,” he said. “They are big games in our season and it’s a really good chance to progress.

“We are enjoying every minute of playing in these matches and so far we have performed really well which is pleasing.”

He continued: “Hopefully we can keep that up on Monday because we don’t want to be knocked out of the competition yet and we believe we have plenty more to give.

“We have a good feeling, we are on a good unbeaten streak at the minute and we are playing well. There’s no reason why we can’t progress but we need to produce our best stuff.”
