David Moyes was happy to have a point on the board after a spirited performance on the south coast.

Sunderland eventually broke the deadlock against Southampton when Jermain Defoe converted from the spot.

However, his penalty was cancelled out by Jay Rodriguez five minutes later to ensure spoils were shared at St Mary’s, after the late sub was able to squeeze the ball underneath goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who put in an outstanding performance after coming in for the injured Vito Mannone.

“I’m happy to get a point, but disappointed we didn’t get three and that we couldn’t see the game out.” Moyes told SAFSee after the game.

“Jordan Pickford knows he could have done better for the goal, but apart from that I think he did very well throughout the game.

“It was always going to be hard coming to Southampton; they are a good side and they did well against Manchester United last week.”

The Black Cats boss was impressed with what he saw from his players and is hoping they can improve on the last two results and have players returning from injury by the time they’re back in action after the international break.

“They had a lot of the ball and there were times we had to defend really well. We had a period just before half time where we did really well but we know we’ve got to improve on that,” he added.

“We’ve still got work to do and we know that, we must stop dropping points in games and see them out until the end.

“There’s an international break coming now and that hopefully gives us time to get players in and get injured players back fit again.”
