report: Ladies lose out to Hull

Hull City 2-1 Sunderland AFC Ladies

Sunderland AFC Ladies fell to a second consecutive loss in the FA Women's National League, with Hull City prevailing at their new home.

Katie Thompson opened the scoring for the hosts with 22 minutes on the clock before Florence Pegrum doubled the advantage five minutes after the break.

Keira Ramshaw pulled one back with an 85th minute penalty but it was too little, too late for the Black Cats.

Maria Farrugia and Jessica Brown returned to the starting XI for Melanie Reay, with Eve Blakey dropping to the bench and Louise Griffiths missing out with injury.

Sunderland started brightly, with Grace McCatty and Ramshaw testing Hull stopper Megan Cooke, while Neve Herron and Emily Scarr firing just high and just wide respectively in the opening 20 minutes.

But Hull would take the lead, scoring from their first attack. Emily Smith slipped a pass through for Thompson who found the bottom corner.

Herron would once again go close as Sunderland tried to fight back when she shot wide.

Scarr nearly repeated her free-kick heroics of a week ago on the stroke of half-time, but her effort brushed the top of the crossbar.

The hosts would double their advantage five minutes after the restart, Pegrum keeping her cool to find the bottom corner from a one-on-one with Claudia Moan.

Scarr nearly created a route back into the game just after the hour mark, her shot was spilled by Cooke, but the 'keeper recovered before debutant Holly Manders could capitalise from the rebound.

Cooke would then deny McCatty, who hit a snapshot towards the top corner after a low corner into the box with 14 minutes to play.

Sunderland pulled one back from the penalty spot after Abbey Joice was pushed in the back as she broke into the box. Skipper Ramshaw fired the spot kick into the bottom corner.

The lasses franticly pushed for an equaliser and should've had a second penalty at the start of added time as Cooke tripped McCatty in the box, but it wasn't to be.

Sunderland kick off 2020-21 with two defeats but will look to bounce back in the Wear-Tees derby at the Stadium of Light this Thursday.
