Maria Farrugia has been called up to represent Malta in their UEFA Women’s European Championship Qualifier next week.
Farrugia has already joined up with the national side, who welcome Denmark to the Centenary Stadium on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old has played in all seven of her nation's qualifiers for the 2022 tournament so far, scoring in a 1-1 draw against Israel in November.
Malta sit in fifth in Group B, ahead of Georgia, while Denmark sit second with a game in hand over top side Italy, the pair holding a 100% winning record so far.
Farrugia will miss Sunderland’s season opener against Burnley this Sunday, returning for next week’s game at Hull City.
