Report: Ladies lose to Huddersfield

Sunderland fell to defeat at the Stafflex Arena with a three goal defeat to Huddersfield Town.

Laura Elford opened the scoring for the hosts after seven minutes, with Katie Nutter doubling the lead five minutes before the break.

Nutter doubled her tally 10 minutes after the restart to round out the Terriers win.

Melanie Reay made two changes from the side that beat Middlesbrough in the week, with Louise Griffiths and Eve Blakey coming in for Erika Warren and Holly Manders.

Huddersfield got on the scoreboard early, as Elford continued her goal scoring exploits of Wednesday, finding the bottom corner after Nutter cut the ball back to her.

Just after the half hour mark Sunderland put together a nice move, Emily Scarr playing a perfect through ball to Keira Ramshaw on the right but Blakey sliced her shot from the skipper’s wide of the target.

The Terriers doubled their advantage with the break fast approaching, Nutter headed home at the back post.

And it didn’t take long for Hudderfield to add a third after the restart, Nutter getting her second of the game in a similar fashion to Elford’s opener, sweeping home from a low cross.

Huddersfield looked to add to their lead, but good defending from Grace McCatty and a couple of important saves from Claudia Moan held the score at three.

Maria Farrugia forced a save out of Bethan Davies in the Huddersfield goal, the ‘keeper using her legs after Farrugia was played in with a clipped ball over the defence.

Ramshaw also tested the ‘keeper, her powerful snapshot from just inside the area was held onto by Davies.

Libbi McInnes went close with moments left to play, but her well struck effort was also turned away by Davies.

A bad day at the office for the Black Cats. They return to the Academy of Light next Sunday as Fylde FC Women visits the North East.
