Sunderland Ladies 2-0 Burnley Women
Sunderland will take their place in the 1st round proper of the FA Women’s National League Cup after a 2-0 Preliminary round win against Burnley.
It took all of the first half for the Black Cats to find a breakthrough, with Jessica Brown scoring in the 45th minute.
It only took two minutes after the restart for goal two, Maria Farrugia with her first goal of the season.
The Lasses continued from where they left off, Katie Barker and Maria Farrugia were rewarded for their fine performance at Huddersfield.
Sunderland threatened early, Laura Bracewell making a double save from Keira Ramshaw and Katie Barker after Farrugia played Jessica Brown down the right.
Sarah Greenhalgh broke into the penalty area in the 13th minute, but Charlotte Potts made a strong challenge to deny the Claret’s captain.
Three minutes later, Mollie Lambert was denied with Bracewell making a good save to turn the midfielder’s header onto and over the bar.
Farrugia tried her luck from range with half an hour played but the shot was wide of the mark despite the decent contact.
Heading towards the break, Ramshaw forced Bracewell into action, with the Burnley stopper saving the Black Cat’s captains powerful, curling effort.
Barker almost found the top corner with an effort from outside of the area after the Clarets cleared Ramshaw’s free kick.
With the last action of the first half Sunderland got their noses in front. Ramshaw drove forward before playing in Brown who had found space on the right. The young winger took a touch before firing in at the near post.
And it was the first action of the second which saw the Lasses double the lead. Farrugia recovered nicely from a poor first touch, taking on and beating three defenders before finding the bottom left corner with an inch perfect strike from the edge of the area.
Neither side created a really clear-cut chance after that. Potts almost got onto the end of a free kick before Brown had a cross picked off by Bracewell.
Claudia Moan made two very good saves on her full debut, first holding onto a powerful effort from Kelly Halligan. The new stopper then got a vital touch on Levi Rathburn’s effort, turning the shot onto the bar with a minute to play.
Sunderland mark their Hetton homecoming with a cup win to see them take their place in the 1st Round.
