Loan watch: Corney gets off to winning start

Only one of Sunderland five loanees were in action this weekend, as Libby Corney’s Wallsend got their season underway with a 2-1 win at Ossett United.

Corney played the whole 90 as her side won on the road. Ellen Turnbull opened the scoring with a well-placed finish in the first half.

Turnbull got a second from a Wallsend counterattack with around 20 minutes to play, finishing Emma Hewitt’s cross from the right.

Ossett pulled one back late on from a corner, but Wallsend saw out the game to take an opening day three points.

South Shields trio Rebecca Ward, Grace Boyes and Eve Blakey get their league campaign underway next Sunday, as they travel to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion.

Ward was on the score sheet last Sunday as Shields picked up a 3-1 FA Cup victory against Boro Rangers. Blakey also appeared in the game as a second half substitute.
