Match preview: Sunderland Ladies v Hull City

Sunderland Ladies round off a busy week with a home tie against Hull City on Sunday.

With Hetton still out of action, the game will now be played at the Academy of Light, with kick off remaining at 2pm.

It’s been a mixed week for the Black Cats, kicking off with a great performance to take a 2-1 win at Fylde - the first time the Lasses have managed to beat The Coasters in four attempts. However, Sunderland dropped their first points of the season at Middlesbrough on Wednesday, failing to take their chances before needing to hang on after a late red card and penalty miss for the hosts.

However, with a number of teams dropping points, the Lasses remain joined top after three games although Huddersfield sit top with a seven-goal advantage.

Maria Farrugia returns from international duty for Sunday’s game, while Louise Griffiths remains available despite Wednesday’s red card as suspensions start seven days after the offense.

It’s been a tough start for Sunday’s opposition, who sit bottom with an identical record to Sheffield. The Tigers are yet to concede less than six goals, with defeats of 7-3, 6-1 and 6-2 in the lead as well as a 6-2 defeat to lower league Norton & Stockton Ancients in the FAWNL Cup.

The side finished tenth last year but have since lost three of the top scorers from last season with Hope Knight, Misty Russell and Amy Louise Kay. Captain Jo Symington remains at the club, the defender ended last campaign as the second top scorer.

Kick-off is 2pm at the Academy of Light this Sunday (September 8). Supporters access is through the Moor Lane entrance, where there will be a limited number of parking spaces available. Tickets are priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.
