Sunderland Ladies return to home soil tonight to welcome Arsenal to Mariners Park, KO 7pm.
Here’s your all you need to know guide ahead of the match…
HOW THINGS STAND
Defeat at the league-leaders on Saturday saw the lasses slip down to ninth, with just two to play. The Lady Black Cats produced a spirited account of themselves in the capital against Chelsea but the defeat leaves them one place off the foot of the table, without a win in eight matches (in all competitions). Arsenal, meanwhile, head to the north east this evening still with high hopes of stealing second-place from Manchester City. While the Gunners were defeated last time when they hit the road – losing 3-0 at Birmingham City – that would appear to have only been a blip as they returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Manchester City, which means they’ve recorded just one defeat in their previous 15 games.
MELANIE COPELAND SAYS
“Tonight, we will need to make sure that all our hard work will come to fruition and we stay concentrated for the whole 90 minutes. Arsenal are a great team full of international players. They can be very dangerous, yet I think we will be well prepared and up for the challenge. We are motivated to end the season on a positive note and we have a great opportunity to do so.”
Sunderland fans need little introduction to Beth Mead. The 23-year-old striker terrorised defences while playing for the Black Cats, scoring 12 goals in 14 matches in her maiden FA Women’s Super League One campaign. And it wasn’t long before Mead caught the eye of the Gunners, signing for them in January 2017. The England striker returns to Wearside tonight as Arsenal’s leading goalscorer this term with six goals.
