SAFC Ladies 3-0 Birmingham City
SAFC Ladies moved up to fifth in the FA Women’s Super League thanks to a superb win over Birmingham City on Saturday.
Dominique Bruinenberg, Hayley Sharp and Abbey Joice were on target at Mariners Park, as Mel Reay’s side moved to within one point of fourth-placed Arsenal.
The Blues made a bright start to the game Charlie Wellings came close to scoring with just three minutes on the clock, but the striker saw her powerful effort beaten away by Rachael Laws.
Wellings was in again soon after but as she looked to pull the trigger, Ellie Stewart made an excellent last-ditch tackle to clear the danger.
Heavy rain made the conditions tough for both sides following the restart, but Bruinenberg opened the scoring on 55 minutes with the midfielder firing home from the edge of the box.
Laws was then called into action again and the stopper passed the test with flying colours, as she produced a cracking save to deny Rachel Williams after Bridgett Galloway was denied at the other end.
In the final 20 minutes, Williams went on two mazy runs to leave defenders trailing in her wake, but on both occasions her finishing let her down.
And the visitors were made to pay as Sharp fired into the corner in the latter stages, before Joice cut in and delivered the knockout blow in added time.
