Streaming: SAFC and CAFC target virtual record

Sunderland AFC have joined forces with Charlton Athletic in an attempt to break the League One virtual attendance record for the 2020-21 season.

Both sides are amongst the most watched in the EFL this campaign and they have endured several memorable encounters over the years across the divisions.

The stakes are high heading into next weekend’s Stadium of Light showdown, as the race for promotion starts to reach its climax and both sides push to secure a place in next season’s Sky Bet Championship.

As it stands, the League One virtual attendance record for the 2020-21 season is 10,363, with the overall EFL record standing at a towering 19,560.

SAFC’s enhanced streaming service, including multi-camera coverage and live matchday show, will once again air when the Addicks travel to Wearside for the 3pm kick-off.

And ahead of the game, both clubs are encouraging their respective supporters to do what they do best and make EFL history.

SAFC’s Chief Operating Officer Steve Davison said: “Throughout the club’s time in League One, our supporters have been outstanding. Home and away, they have broken many attendance-related records and despite an incredibly challenging 12 months, they have continued to support the club by backing the team from home in week in, week out. It’s a huge shame that they will not be at the Stadium of Light during the final run-in, but as always, they have a big part to play and I’m sure the team will continue to feel their support from afar.”

Charlton Athletic Owner Thomas Sandgaard said: “Charlton and Sunderland have two of the most passionate fan bases in the EFL. The two teams have played in some famous games and there is a real respect between the two sets of supporters. Hopefully, by joining together we can break a record for this season and show that both these two historic clubs are on the way back. I am very confident next week’s game can become the highest streamed game in League One this season. The target of becoming the highest streamed game in the EFL is ambitious, but with these two fan bases anything is possible.”
