Preview: Hoffenheim v FC Köln

FC Köln travel to Hoffenheim this evening in search of their first victory since the Bundesliga’s return.

The Billy Goats come into the contest off the back of two, 2-2 draws, most recently against Fortuna Düsseldorf at the RheinEnergieSTADION.

Kenan Karaman and Erik Thommy’s goals either side of Mark Uth’s missed penalty gave Düsseldorf the advantage.

But Köln wouldn’t lie down and through Anthony Modeste’s goal in the 88th minute, shortly followed by Jhon Cordoba’s stoppage-time header, they salvaged a point.

Markus Gisdol’s side currently sit in mid-table, but they could leapfrog Hoffenheim and Schalke into eighth should David Wagner’s men lose out to Düsseldorf this evening.

The Billy Goats boast a fine record on the road, with three wins, one draw and two defeats in their last six outings.

And a 6-0 drubbing in their last meeting at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena should be extra motivation for Köln to come away with a positive result this time out.

Team news

Rafael Czichos remains out through injury, so QPR loanee Tonu Leistner is expected to retain his place in the heart of defence once again.

And attacking midfielder Dominic Drexler is in line to start after claiming a pair of assists in the draw with Düsseldorf.

Opposition

Similar to Köln, Hoffenheim also find themselves in mid-table obscurity, but lie two points ahead of the Billy Goats in ninth.

Alfred Schreuder’s side failed to win for the seventh Bundesliga clash in a row on Saturday, after playing out a 1-1 draw with rock-bottom SC Paderborn.

But depending on results elsewhere, Hoffenheim can jump to within three points of a Europa League place as they make a late charge for European football.

They will be without Andrej Kramaric, Sargis Adamyan, Ishak Belfodil and Kostas Stafylidis, but centre-back Kevin Akpoguma could return after sitting the last game out.
