Preview: FC Köln v Mainz 05

Köln return to action tomorrow for the first time in over two months when Mainz 05 head to the RheinEnergieSTADION.

Bundesliga action has been on hold since March due to the Coronavirus outbreak, but returns this weekend with the Billy Goats looking to mount a late bid for a European place.

Markus Gisdol’s side were in scintillating form before football was ground to a halt, having won three of their last four matches.

They had also won five of their last six Bundesliga clashes at their formidable RheinEnergieSTADION, with the only defeat coming against champions Bayern Munich back in February.

The Billy Goats, depending on results elsewhere, could climb to within two points of a Europa League spot in sixth with a victory.

Team news

Top scorer Jhon Cordoba is available for selection after a slight concern, but Rafael Czichos, Niklas Hauptmann and Ismail Jakobs are all doubtful.

Centre-back Sebastiaan Bornauw is in contention, having recovered from a muscular injury and is expected to be partnered by former QPR man Toni Leistner.

Opposition

Mainz currently sit in 15th, just four points above Fortuna Dusseldorf, who occupy the relegation play-off place.

The visitors have struggled this season, having recorded just five wins in 25 matches, but they have only lost one of their last five in the Bundesliga.

Striker Jean-Phillippe Mateta misses out through suspension and stopper Robin Zentner has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.
