Preview: Augsburg v FC Köln

Our partner club FC Köln travel to Augsburg on Sunday in search of their first victory in six games.

The Billy Goats lost out 4-2 to third placed RB Leipzig on Monday, with goals from Jhon Cordoba and Anthony Modeste not enough to earn a share of the spoils.

This week, Markus Gisdol’s side make the long trip to the Augsburg Arena looking to get back on track after stuttering since the Bundesliga’s restart.

Top scorer Jhon Cordoba netted his 12th of the season against Leipzig, but the problems have been in defence with the Billy Goats conceding at least twice in each of their last five games.

But Köln know that should they sort their defensive woes out, an 11th success of the campaign is just around the corner that would leave them on the brink of securing survival.

Team news

Midfielder Dominick Drexler joins Sebastiaan Bornauw watching from the side lines after the former picked up his fifth yellow card, while the latter serves the last of a two-game suspension.

Attacking pair Mark Uth and Cordoba are also doubts after picking up muscle and knee injuries respectively.

Opposition

Augsburg currently sit in 13th place and would move level on points with Köln with a victory on Sunday.

Heiko Herrlich’s side hover four points above the relegation play-off place and still have plenty of work to do if they want to secure their Bundesliga status for another season.

The hosts have centre-back Jeffrey Gouweleeuw available again after he missed their previous fixture through suspension.

Daniel Baier is in contention for a return to the starting XI, but they are without Simon Asta who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
