'It's nice to get the deal done' : Bailey Wright on return to Wearside

Bailey Wright has revealed the feeling he received from everyone around the place was one of the key factors in wanting to return to Sunderland on a permanent basis.

The 28-year-old defender sealed a two-year deal with the Black Cats on Sunday, linking up with the Lads once again after enjoying a successful loan spell last campaign.

Wright’s arrival in January led to an upturn in form for Phil Parkinson’s side, but an ankle injury, and the coronavirus pandemic, cut-short his initial stay.

And speaking to SAFC Unfiltered, the club’s official podcast, Wright expressed his relief at getting the deal over the line.

“It’s nice to finally get the deal done after what’s been an interesting few months, and I can’t wait to get in and start pre-season.

“I knew when I came on loan in January that the possibility of signing permanently would be there.

“Talks had been ongoing for a while, but I’m glad we got it done.”

During his initial stay on Wearside, the Australian was primarily deployed in the middle of a back three, and the Black Cats racked up four clean sheets in five games with Wright at the heart of defence.

“The system is something I’ve really enjoyed playing in,” Wright continued.

“When I spoke to the gaffer when he first wanted to bring me into the club, he saw me playing in the middle of the back three.

“A massive part of me wanting to come to the club was the manager and the group of lads we had.

“I only played five games, but I loved the feeling I received from everyone in the club and everyone around the place.

“I’m excited to get a full pre-season with the lads and be able to build towards the season, one which I’m very confident about.”
